Master Thesis "Sensor characterization and development of calibration models for ATR sugar sensor"

In this master’s thesis a newly developed attenuated total reflection (ATR) sugar sensor will be characterized in terms of electrical noise, signal stability, temperature drift, etc... Measurement campaigns of sugar solutions and fruit juice will be carried out. Therefore, the sample solutions will be prepared, and the execution of the measurements will be planned. The acquired measurement data will be analyzed, and calibration models will be developed to determine the sugar content of the solutions from the sensor data. This master’s thesis consists of an experimental part and a strong data analysis part. The prospective candidate is encouraged to present the results at a national or international conference and/or publish the results in a scientific journal.

Your future responsibilities

  • Sensor characterization (noise, stability) of ATR sugar sensor demonstrator
  • Data acquisition campaigns (sugar solutions and fruit juice)
  • Data analysis of data acquired with ATR sugar sensor demonstrator
  • Development of calibration models for determination of sugar content from sensor data
  • Writing and defense of the thesis
  • Publication of the results at a conference or in a scientific journal

Your profile

  • Student in one of the following fields: statistics, data analysis, chemistry with data analysis background
  • Experience: data analysis, learning algorithms, software implementation, Matlab or Python required
  • Experience with laboratory equipment (e.g. scales, microscopes, spectrometers) as well as setting up and executing laboratory measurements desired
  • English: fluent, German: at least basic knowledge desirable
